December 18th, 2003 - Thursday Drained It's been a good but draining day today. Hayley has been in good spirits but she's coming down with a cold (ooh, just in time for the HOLIDAYS) so she's been glued to me a lot more than usual. She's also nursing like a newborn again - constantly and for lengthy periods of time. So, I didn't do much worth writing about and I'm also a little tired. Reader questions then! First April: Will you bake cookies with Hayley to leave out for Santa and if so...what recipe will you use? Well, no, not yet. I think I might wait and do it next year when she is old enough to really take part a little more. By the age of two she'll be able to help me cut out shapes or shake sprinkles on the cookies. Also, she'll be old enough to eat them since I'm still a little afraid of giving her too much in the way of sugar. She has a hard enough time with sleeping without hyping her up! However, we will put cookies and milk out for Santa (or, well since I'll be drinking it, maybe Santa can have egg nog this year!) and a bowl of water for the reindeer. We did that last year too and it's one of our traditions which comes from one I used to do every year. Even when I stopped believing in Santa and even when I moved out I used to put out my cookies. My grandmother would usually eat them in the morning when she got up. On the other hand, now that you've asked, I'm almost contemplating it. If I can get all the ingredients, maybe I'll give it a shot. We'll see how time goes. In keeping with the food, some questions from Catherine: If you had unlimited time and money, what special meal would you cook? Hmmm. I don't know. There really aren't many recipes I have that cost too much to make or that take too much time as long as Hayley is in a good mood and willing to occupy herself while I prepare it. I guess the only thing I can think of that would be pricey due to a good cut of meat and red wine is a nice Beef Bourgignon from scratch. What foods or meal would you consider traditions in your family? Off the top of my head: We used to have cabbage rolls around St-Patrick's day. We eat turkey every Thanksgiving and Christmas. Christmas Eve is spaghetti. We have a brunch with eggs, sausages, bacon, and we used to have my dad's home fries for Christmas morning. My own tradition is to have Turkey Tetrazzini with the leftover turkey after Christmas. We have pancakes for supper on Shrove Tuesday. This year I hope to implement a tradition of having a log cake for Yule. I'm probably forgetting some but I can't think of any more. If Hayley ended up being a picky eater, what food would you be most disappointed that she didn't like? Well, I was a picky eater when I was a kid too, so while it would be frustrating at the time to worry about what she will and won't eat, I would have faith that she'd outgrow it like I did since I will now eat most foods and lots of it! I guess the most disappointing would be chicken since it's something that we eat often. It would really cramp our dinner style! ![]() ![]() I'll save more questions for the next entry but keep 'em coming! Here are some pictures from today.
![]() ![]() I'm so tired. I hope her nose stays clear enough and her teeth stay pain-free enough for us both to get some quality sleep. It's no longer about quantity it's about quality. << - Journal index - >>
