December 7th, 2003 - Sunday Snow day We had such a great evening yesterday. We went over to see our friends Dino and Nancy along with Dave and June. It was a nice relaxed atmosphere with just salad (actually not "just" salad, but a fantastic one, really) and basil mozzarella chicken, crackers and cheese and paté, and wine. We had a fire going and Baby Einstein on DVD to entertain the three kids, and it was just so amazing. Every time we've all gotten together lately it's been for someone's birthday so it was a switch to have a quiet gathering with just us.
We fed all the kids ahead of time. Hayley had some mixed vegetables, some chicken cacciatore with rice that Nancy had made, and of course she begged for some of the cheese and crackers. We thought everyone was happy and full and ready to play with some toys while we ate our dinner. Wrong! For some reason, all three girls gathered around Nancy like baby birds, begging for pizza crust. All that was missing was a chorus of "peep peep!"
We didn't stay too late, leaving shortly after everyone got changed into pajamas. After that, we came home and got Hayley into bed and spent the rest of the evening taking it easy. ![]() ![]() This morning while I was checking my email and having a quick coffee, Hayley wandered over to my desk. My desk is right next to the balcony so I keep a pair of shoes there in case I go outside during the summer (usually to look at some astronomy thing in the sky, naturally). Hayley decided to wear one. Only one, mind you, but she sure kept it on for a long time.
It had started snowing yesterday and today it was still coming down lightly. It was cold but not ridiculously so, so I dressed Hayley up nice and snug, and bundled her in a snowsuit. Since she's still learning to walk, putting a snowsuit on her pretty much caused her to become immobile. I took her down to the courtyard and she looked at the snow.
She was fine as long as she didn't lose her balance, because she didn't like sitting or kneeling in the snow. She liked taking my hand though and I helped her walk all the way around the building through the snow. Before coming back upstairs, I took off one of her mitts to let her touch the snow on our walkway. It made her laugh. It's funny how so many things change when you have a child. I generally hate snow. I like the first snowfall because it's pretty, blablabla, but it's a pain in the ass. People forget how to drive, walking sucks, and I hate the cold. Plus, it turns to brown slush so quickly. However, it's exciting to Hayley (as was seen when she laughed at the snow through the balcony this morning) so it's exciting to me too. For now, at least. Once we got back upstairs, I decided to be a very bad mom (tongue in cheek) by making her some hot chocolate to commemorate her first time playing in the snow. Of course, hers was really just warm and it was very mild as far as the chocolate was concerned. I really just wanted it to have a tiny hint of chocolate flavor. I was very excited to give it to her.
She was very unimpressed.
She tried a few sips of it, tried to offer it back to me, then put it on the floor and asked to nurse instead. Oh well. I enjoyed my hot chocolate! At least she drank a bit more of it later on while she had her cheese and cracker snack.
![]() ![]() That's all I have tonight. Maybe tomorrow I will regale you with stories of how incredibly and obscenely delicious the Faux Moussaka I made for supper was. << - Journal index - >>
