Thanksgiving

We had a really nice Thanksgiving weekend. On Saturday we got up early and went up north to visit with my family. My parents and sister were up to see my grandmother, and my cousin, aunt, uncle, and family friend had come in from Ontario as well. It was so nice to see everyone. My aunt and uncle hadn't seen Hayley since Easter and my cousin had last seen her last Thanksgiving, so they all noticed a really big difference in her.

We took it easy, just hanging out and enjoying ourselves. In the afternoon, we went to the grocery store up the street for a little impromptu photo shoot. Hayley loves pumpkins, as I mentioned in the previous entry. She loves them so much that she would have outraged screaming fits whenever she spied my ceramic pumpkin candle holders that I have out for Halloween because I wouldn't let her play with them. We bought her plastic pumpkins, a window pumpkin, and a plush pumpkin and she loves them all (in fact, she's sleeping all curled up with the plush pumpkin right now).

The grocery store had a big display of pumpkins for sale in crates. I decided that we should just take her up and plop her right in the middle and take some pictures. They were outside and no one was actually standing there selling them, so we figured it would be okay, and it was. Even when a store employee was having her break out front, she didn't seem to mind at all. Rather, she appeared to be pretty amused.

Hayley was so excited I thought she might burst. I wonder what the appeal is. Maybe it's the bright orange color that makes her like them so much. We got lots of pictures and George brought the video camera too (and we now have a video capture card so once it's installed and I figure it out, I can hopefully share video snippets online too).

The pictures turned out well but my favorite by far is this one.

We had a wonderful dinner of turkey and all the trimmings. There was pumpkin pie, which is my favorite but it was also a celebration of my cousin's 30th birthday so I had birthday cake instead, electing to bring a slice of pie home with me.

We got home in the early evening and went to Dino and Nancy's house for a BBQ, probably the last one of the season before winter settles in. Unfortunately, I couldn't get Hayley to go to sleep because she had slept for 45 minutes in the car. Also, she was determined to crawl all over the deck but it was really too damp for that and she already has a cold so George brought us home. I put her to bed and he went back to the party. I was tired, so it was okay, I didn't mind. It was better for Hayley too. Even though she thought she didn't need to go to bed, she really did because she was exhausted and fell asleep really quickly once she was in the bed.

Sunday was spent at George's parents' house for more Thanksgiving fun. His sister was really happy to see Hayley since she couldn't make it to the birthday party. We spent a large amount of time supervising Hayley, since all she wanted to do was climb up the stairs over and over (we don't have any stairs in the apartment, not even a step, so it's a big novelty for her). We had another excellent turkey dinner and had a nice time.

Monday was just another day, really. Even though it's technically Thanksgiving that day, we didn't do anything special for it. Also, Hayley was a monstrous child all day long. She didn't sleep well on Sunday night, waking up four times, including one time where she was up for an hour and a half between 3 and 4:30. Then she got up at a little past 8 in the morning and only took a half hour nap all day. She was cranky as hell and demanding and unhappy with everything. No matter what I tried to do for her, nothing worked. I should have taken her out to the park but I was so exhausted myself that I just didn't have the energy.

I was very happy to put her in the bath at 7 and into bed a little past 7:30. George's sister came by to see her but didn't stay long because she didn't want to get Hayley all worked up right before going down for the night. Also, I think my own tired state and frustration from the day were showing and I think I may have been a little less than welcoming and receptive to company. Oops.

Last night was mildly better. She was still up about 3 times but at least she went right back to sleep each time. She also only napped for an hour but she was in relatively good spirits until just past supper time. She had a good bath but was really pissed off during the diapering and the pajama ritual. She fell asleep at 8:30 and did so in under ten minutes. Tired baby.

Still, Thanksgiving weekend was good overall. Like everything, I was looking forward to it so much that I can't believe how quickly it all blew by.

The rest of the photos from the entire weekend can be seen here.

Notified readers love turkey.

On this day (more or less):

2002: All my Oct. 2002 entries are lost.
2001: Where were you during the Anthrax scare in downtown Montreal? Standing on the corner, as close as I was allowed to get, like a big old doofus, taking pictures.
2000: YES, even YOUR car comes with a little flasher, and if you take the half a second required to turn it on, it actually lets us know that you wish to turn or switch lanes, TRY it, you'll like it!
1999: Don't get overly enthusiastic with the whole opening of the window - it is not necessary to have it open wide enough to let a hurricane in.

Reading: Under the Tuscan Sun and White Oleander.

Listening: Baby monitor.

Watching: Tuesday's comedy line-up on ABC. I really like that new show "I'm With Her".

Eating: Breakfast - PB & J sandwiches. Lunch - Turkey sandwich. Supper - Italian sausages.

Wearing: Black track pants, Georgetown sweatshirt.

Feeling: Tired and groggy.
