December 14th, 2003 - Sunday Random Hayley Tidbits Wow. So I woke up this morning at a little past 8 am and found that on an otherwise mundane Sunday morning, the breaking news is that the US coalition actually caught Saddam Hussein. I'm frankly a little stunned. I honestly thought that he had either made it out of the country and was hiding out elsewhere or that he had been killed in the first bombing attacks on Iraq and that they just hadn't found his remains yet (or that his remains had been moved and hidden by his supporters). Mostly I believed the latter, thinking that he was long dead. Interesting turn of events. I wonder what lies ahead. Now if only the Bush administration can try to remember that they're supposed to still be trying to capture Bin Laden since over two years ago. ![]() ![]() Last night Hayley was up until 11 pm. I nearly lost my mind. I wanted to cry. Actually I wanted to tell her to go watch a movie and let ME sleep then, if she didn't want to. I guess it wasn't so bad, because it wasn't like she was super cranky or anything. She was just awake. At about 10:30 I had to pee so I brought her out of the bedroom and told her to sit on the floor in front of me and to stay put. She never moved. Then I brought her out to the living room and kept the light down low, removed all toys from the floor and told her there was to be NO playing and that if she insisted on staying up so many hours past bedtime that she was going to have to sit quietly in the middle of the floor and keep calm. The carpet has a little oval design thing in the center so I said that she had to sit there. Every so often she would start to crawl off in the direction of her toys, and once while I was in the kitchen getting a drink of water she made a beeline for the CD rack; each time I said "excuse me! Get back in the oval please!" Immediately she would turn around and sit in the oval again. She played with her fingers for awhile and looked at the lights on the tree. Then she whined a bit and gave me the milk sign so I took her back to the bedroom and she fell asleep within about five minutes. She had a pretty decent night too for a change. But going to bed at 11 at night is ridiculous. It's got to be the stupid teeth. She was sleeping so well before. She'd be in bed by 8:15 or so, and asleep by 8:30 or a little past that. She was waking up but with the ten day night weaning plan she was going back to sleep easily and even slept through the night on several occasions. It was wonderful! Then it all went to hell. At exactly the same time her sleep fell apart, I noticed the swollen gums and the bulging teeth beneath the surface so it's the only thing I can think of. I guess having four sharp eye teeth come in at the same time is enough to make anyone sleep badly right? And Advil isn't doing that much to help her really. I can't wait until they come in completely so that we can get back on track. I hate teeth. Can't we all just evolve to the point of not needing them anymore? We can all just gum our food and drink smoothies instead. ![]() ![]() Today is one of those weird days. I know that it's Sunday but it doesn't feel like it. It doesn't feel like any day in particular. I haven't done anything interesting at all unless you count the fact that Hayley and I played with the rats for awhile and I finally folded some stupid laundry that had been lying around. Even Hayley must have found it boring today because she took two naps. That's pretty unusual since she was down to only one nap since she was about 11 months old. We were up at 8 and around 10:15 she dragged out the sling and asked me to put her in it (she asked by holding it up and grunting at me: "Unh! UNH!"). By 10:30 she was sound asleep and only woke up because at 11 I tried to move to the couch to relax with my book. Then even though she wasn't acting particularly tired this afternoon, I decided to arbitrarily put her down for an attempt at a nap at 2:40. She fell asleep pretty easily and I was so tired that I decided to sleep until 3:30 myself. We even had to wake her up at 4 because she was still sleeping, but going past 4 o'clock puts us at risk of her not sleeping until some ungodly hour again. ![]() ![]() She's suddenly walking so much. She just gets up and walks around because she feels like it instead of having to be prompted to do it. It's like she suddenly realized that she can do it at any time, not just when we made the suggestion to do so. She's more smooth about it now too and looks a little less like a clone of Frankenstein's monster. Apparently she's still tired though because she just fell on her butt for no apparent reason and a few minutes ago she was sitting on the floor and she just leaned slowly to the left until she fell over completely. Then she laid on the carpet and laughed like a clown. ![]() ![]() She had gone off books for awhile and showed zero interest in them. Then this week she was suddenly all into them again. At least ten times a day I am asked to read her one book or the other. I love that she loves them so much. She recognizes pictures of apples (as well as when they show up in "Baby Mozart") and the sun and the moon. When I get to a picture of a dog she barks. If she thinks that you're not going to read to her because it takes you more than half a second to get started, she gets huffy and starts whimpering. When you're done reading to her and say "all done!" she throws her hands up in the air accordingly. She'll do the same when she finishes eating. While she eats, she may drop her sippy cup at some point. If she does, she'll say "uh oh!" When she has her diaper changed she takes the old one and puts it into the garbage. Then if she tries to reach back in to get it out, I'll tell her the garbage is dirty and she says "dirtllly!" For some reason she thinks the water bottle for the rats contains old water. Sometimes she'll try to take it off the cage and I'll tell her that no, she can't do that and she looks at me very seriously and says "ollld!" Hey, if that's what it takes to keep her from stealing their water, I'll play along! When I'm cooking supper and she sees me stirring things in pots on the stove, she looks at me and very enthusiastically says "MMM!" I appreciate the vote of confidence. Any time I'm chopping up a fruit for her to eat, she calls it an apple, even if it's a mango. George and I have taught her about things that are hot since she always wants to touch our coffee cups. To really demonstrate it, I would touch something hot and then quickly pull my hand away and say "Ooh! Hot! Ooh!" Now that the heaters are on, she'll touch them and even though they're really only warm, she'll shake her hand, say "Ooh!" and smile at me as though to show me how clever she is. What a goof ball. She's growing up so fast.
