December 1st, 2003 - Monday Round-up I'm participating in Holidailies again this year (see link to your right). Clearly I am insane. I did it two years ago, but back then I didn't have a toddler and it was much easier. We'll see how I do. ![]() ![]() Here's a little round up of the past several days. On Thursday we went to a shopping center to buy a little something "for Hayley". When we went for the Santa Claus parade and spent some time in the pet store a few weeks ago, Hayley thought that the funniest thing in the store was the tank full of rats. Well, she also really liked the toucan, but the day I pay several hundred dollars for a freakin' bird... Anyway, she really enjoyed them. She looked at the gerbils and hamsters in the surrounding tanks but she kept gravitating back to the rats, pointing at them, laughing, and shrieking "dat!" We always felt badly for her because she loves animals and doesn't have any that she can really look at. Caesar was a really great cat for a kid because he was so affectionate that he would tolerate being patted enthusiastically. Unfortunately, he was also territorial when she came home, and crapping all over the carpet and peeing all over the corners of every possible room wasn't exactly conducive to a happy home, so he had to go live with a friend. Cricket isn't territorial in the least but she also runs like the wind when Hayley comes into view. We can't have a dog because our building doesn't allow dogs. So we got her rats. The reason that I say that they were "for Hayley" in quotation marks is because let's be honest for a second: I have always wanted rats. I've wanted rats since I was a teenager but could never have any - first my mother is very repulsed by rats so I couldn't have any while at home. Then I always had so many animals already when I moved out that I never got any. So when we saw how much Hayley loved the rats we jumped on it. She can't really play with them or even pet them unsupervised yet, but she can learn about animals by watching them and at least they don't run and hide behind the washing machine when she comes near them. ![]() And in the meantime, I am truly enjoying having a couple of rats. I thought that we had a brown one and a beige one, but it turned out that the brown rat is actually dark brownish-grey. It was just the fluorescent lighting in the store that made him look brown. The grey one is Nicodemus (Secret of N.I.M.H. anyone?) and the beige one is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. They are both males. I would kill the guy at the pet store if I ended up accidentally breeding rats, but I peeked at their undersides the other day and yes, it's pretty obvious that they're both male, even at such a young age. ![]() ![]() On Saturday we went to Dino and Nancy's house because their daughter Rudi was having her one year birthday party. I can hardly believe that it's already been a year since she was born. The party started at five and was a lot of fun. I brought my beef and cheese casserole which is apparently a really big hit and there was a lot of good food. We fed the babies (though really how much longer can we call them that?) first and Rudi got her first piece of birthday cake. She was very unimpressed.
Happy, waiting for cake.
Hayley wouldn't go to sleep at all. We stayed until 11:30 and she flat out refused to sleep but she wasn't being cranky either so we decided to stay. Even Rudi was up way past her bed time so she had someone to play with. Rudi had gotten a Glo-Worm as a gift and Hayley fell in love with it, holding it, making it play music, and lying down to hug it on their couch. I told George we would have to go the very next day to buy her one since she clearly loved it so much. Then I found out the same person who gave it to Rudi had gotten one as a belated gift for Hayley too. Thank goodness for that because it helped her go to sleep for several bed times and naps since that night.
Later that night it turned into a pajama party.
![]() ![]() Sunday was quiet. I had invited my family over for dinner since my grandmother was in town to do some Christmas shopping but they turned me down to do a bit more shopping and to set up their decorations (whatever) so we just took it easy. Then Hayley decided to wake up at 10:30 (stupid eye teeth coming in on the bottom!) and stayed up until almost 2 in the morning. It was mildly annoying but I watched a very funny and cheesy movie called "Psycho Beach Party" starring Nicholas Brendan from "Buffy" and Lauren Ambrose from "Six Feet Under" so at least I wasn't trying to get her to sleep and getting frustrated about it. I've been tired today. I think that I'm going to have some tea and read a bit of my book before bed. Let's see how the rest of Holidailies goes. << - Journal index - >>
